Polestar 2 Production Reportedly Ends in China Ahead of 2027 Successor

European media report that Polestar 2 production has ended at the Luqiao plant in China after more than 200,000 units. Polestar has not officially confirmed the reported run-out.

Production of the current Polestar 2 electric fastback has reportedly ended at the Luqiao manufacturing facility in China, according to European automotive media reports published on 28 October 2026. Polestar had not separately confirmed the end of production in an official statement at the time of those reports.

Reports indicate the final Polestar 2 has left the production line

Electrive and other European publications reported that the final examples of the original Polestar 2 had left the Chinese assembly line. The outlets estimated that more than 200,000 units of the model were produced in China during its manufacturing run.

The production total is a media-reported figure and should not be treated as a newly released, audited company production statistic. Polestar has separately stated that more than 190,000 Polestar 2 vehicles had been sold, which is a different measure from total manufacturing output.

Polestar 2 has been built in China since 2020

The Polestar 2 entered production at the Luqiao plant in March 2020. It became the Swedish electric performance brand’s first volume-produced fully electric model, following the earlier Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid.

The model’s development roots include the Volvo 40.2 concept shown in 2016. During its production lifecycle, the Polestar 2 received significant updates, including a change from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive on key single-motor variants for the 2024 model year, alongside improvements to its powertrain and battery options.

Some European markets are offering stock vehicles

According to Electrive’s 28 October report, Polestar has begun directing customers in several European markets towards vehicles already in stock rather than allowing them to configure new examples of the outgoing model. Inventory availability may differ by country, dealer and specification.

The report of a production run-out does not mean existing Polestar 2 vehicles are being withdrawn from the road or that the model has been recalled. There was no announcement of that kind associated with the production report.

Polestar has confirmed a new successor for 2027

Polestar announced earlier in 2026 that a completely new successor to the Polestar 2 is planned for launch in 2027. In its February model roadmap, the company described the replacement as a new generation rather than a minor update of the current fastback.

Polestar has not yet confirmed the successor’s final production location, complete technical specifications, battery capacity, pricing or certified driving range in the production-end reports. Consequently, none of those details can be stated as definitive for the replacement model.

Further electric models in the Polestar line-up

Polestar’s publicly announced plan includes the Polestar 5 grand tourer, a new Polestar 4 variant, the next-generation Polestar 2 and the Polestar 7 compact SUV, currently planned for 2028. These programmes are separate from the reported end of manufacturing for the original Polestar 2.

In its half-year 2026 financial reporting, Polestar said the existing Polestar 2 was approaching the end of its lifecycle, supporting the expected transition to a successor. That prior statement did not itself confirm the precise date of the final vehicle produced at Luqiao.

Production report remains subject to manufacturer confirmation

As of 29 October 2026, the conclusion that Polestar 2 manufacturing had stopped came from automotive media reporting, while the 2027 successor timetable was confirmed in Polestar’s official model roadmap. The two claims have different levels of confirmation and should not be conflated.
