Bentley Torcal Electric SUV Completes Over One Million Kilometres of Testing

Bentley says its Torcal electric SUV prototypes and pre-series vehicles covered more than 1 million kilometres in durability and validation testing.

Bentley’s first battery-electric model, the Torcal, has completed more than one million kilometres of testing across its prototype and pre-series vehicle fleet, according to a development update reported on 29 October 2026. The programme covered extreme weather, varied road conditions and battery safety tests ahead of the SUV’s planned customer deliveries.

More than one million kilometres of Torcal validation

The manufacturer reported that the Torcal test fleet accumulated more than 1,000,000 km (approximately 621,000 miles) during the development process. Tests took place in locations ranging from Sweden, where temperatures reached approximately minus 38 degrees Celsius, to hot-weather environments exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

High-altitude validation was also conducted at locations including Pikes Peak in Colorado, at elevations above 14,000 feet. The overall testing figure covers multiple prototypes and pre-production vehicles rather than the mileage of a single example.

Battery structure and safety testing

According to the reported Bentley development data, the Torcal high-voltage battery weighs approximately 625 kg and has an energy density of more than 180 Wh/kg. Engineers fitted a protective composite shield beneath the battery enclosure to reduce exposure to impacts from the road.

The validation programme included battery fire-resistance requirements, impact testing, corrosion exposure and other durability procedures. Bentley’s testing description includes an assessment of how the battery responds to a steel projectile with a diameter of 30 mm and a mass of approximately 111 grams, travelling at more than 100 mph toward the underside protection structure.

The manufacturer’s test programme also includes a requirement to prevent fire propagation or explosion for at least two hours in the event of a battery thermal incident. These figures describe the specified tests and engineering requirements; they should not be read as evidence that any road vehicle is immune to battery damage.

Virtual development before physical production

Bentley used Extended Reality (XR) tools during development to evaluate the Torcal’s interior layout, ergonomics and vehicle architecture before all physical components were available. Engineers could assess cabin configurations and customer interactions in a digital environment, making changes before moving to the physical prototype stage.

The development process later incorporated physical design confirmation, including component clearances, service access, assembly methods and fit and finish. Bentley reported that more than 90% of the vehicle’s parts were available for this phase. Laser scanning was used to compare physical assemblies with computer-aided design information.

Software integration updated every six weeks

The Torcal engineering programme used specialist teams for electrical architecture, software integration and validation. The manufacturer described a process in which a new software integration level was prepared about every six weeks and then checked in laboratories and vehicles.

The testing programme covered system interactions, software reliability and the functions of the electric vehicle’s control architecture. Updates were evaluated through multiple stages before being adopted for the next phase of development.

Bentley Torcal is a new electric model line

Bentley publicly unveiled the Torcal in September 2026 as the company’s first fully electric production model line. The SUV is offered as Torcal and Torcal S, with the more powerful S capable of up to 888 PS when launch control is active, according to the manufacturer’s model information.

The October engineering update concerns durability and validation work, not a second vehicle unveiling or the opening of a new order period. Bentley’s official model information states that EU electric consumption and driving-range figures remain subject to type approval.
